“If you are a GamePass subscriber, you’re going to be very happy in 90 minutes.”
Larry “Major Nelson’ Hryb promised a packed house piled into Fortress Melbourne something special, setting up Xbox and Bethesda’s 2022 showcase.
And boy did it deliver more gameplay than Xbox fans are used to.
Starfield
Microsoft ended this morning’s show with an extended gameplay look at its biggest upcoming game – Starfield.
This was the information dump fans have been keen to see.
Over 100 galaxies to explore. More than 1,000 planets.
Gunplay, mysterious moons and landscapes, pirates, fantastical creatures, resource gathering and a hint of story!
Looks like we’ll be chasing artefacts across the galaxies to unravel the mystery of what ‘they’ are building.
Who or what ‘they’ are remains to be seen.

It appears the player can swap between first and third person gameplay.
Behind it all is a hyper-detailed character creation and upgrade system, with the ability to build outposts – and spaceships.
You can choose your crew, look and layout of your starship and fly to traverse space, and fight enemy ships.
It’s both daunting and awe inspiring in scope.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass in 2023 on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
Hideo Kojima x Xbox Studios
PlayStation darling Hideo Kojima is teaming up with Xbox.
The maker of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding appeared in person to announce the partnership.
He spoke of a ‘completely new game’ he’s ‘always wanted to make’ and the potential of Microsoft’s cloud technology.
Don’t hold your breath though. Kojima-san said it ‘might take some time’ before we see anything more.
Minecraft Legends
This is sure to be a hit.
Minecraft Legends takes what fans know and love about their biomes and overlays them with a world-ending threat.
It’s a third-person action and strategy game.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
FINALLY.
Australia’s Team Cherry has been quietly chipping away at its sequel to the highly rated Hollow Knight for years and it looks incredible.
No one expected it to be in an Xbox showcase or for it to be available to play day one on Xbox GamePass.
No release date yet but this one will be coming to consoles, PC and the cloud.
Forza Motorsport
Look out Gran Turismo.
Forza Motorsport is coming in Spring of 2023 and is in pole position to be the best looking racing game on consoles.
Dynamic time of day, damage down to scratches and dirt and all of it in beautiful 4K.
Xbox proudly displayed ‘all in-game 4K footage’ in the bottom coroner of the screen as it showed off its most realistic world yet.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox consoles, Cloud and PC.
Forza Horizon 5 x Hot Wheels
The leaks were true and we’re so glad they are.
Driving upside down in a loop-de-loop on July 19, 2022 can’t come soon enough.
Halo: Infinite… in Flight Simulator?
By far the biggest – and most disappointing – tease of the show.
There were cheers as the classic Halo theme echoed through Fortress Melbourne and Master Chief’s ship appeared on screen.
Turns out, it’s just being added to Flight Simulator along with some helicopters and gliders.
High on Life
We did not have this world premiere on our bingo card.
Bringing the fun of Rick and Morty to a weird first person shooter on weirder planets with weapons that talk to you? Yes please.
There’s no release date just yet but it’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox consoles, Cloud and PC.
Ark II
Vin Diesel grunting on top of a T-rex. That’s all you need to know.
It’s coming in 2023 and looks like it’ll feature a Kratos/Arteus style relationship between warrior and a child.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox consoles, Cloud and PC.
Redfall
The gameplay debut for this upcoming open-world co-op FPS opened the show.
It didn’t help that the audio and screen kept cutting out at our event but none-the-less, the crowd loved it.
Arkane Studios (Prey, Dishonoured) are dropping players on an island full of vampires early in 2023.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox consoles, Cloud and PC.
Overwatch 2
A ‘Wastelander’ with an Australian accent is Overwatch 2’s newest addition.
The trailer promised ‘a new era’ starting October 4.
It’s free-to-play but no word on whether it fixes the issues fans had with the reworked 5v5 battles.
I’ve never seen a trailer end with ‘to be continued’ – but this one did!
Scorn
After years in development hell, Scorn finally has a release date.
The grotesque, gory FPS – which is not for the squeamish – is coming out on 21 October 2022.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
Diablo IV
Diablo 4 is on its way in 2023 and its fifth and final class is Necromancer.
Gameplay looks great – and exactly how you’d expect.
It’ll be available on Xbox GamePass on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
Sea of Thieves
Everyone’s favourite pirate simulator is getting a sizeable update.
You can now customise, save and even name your ship.
The features will launch with Season 7 on July 21, 2022.
The game is available now on Xbox GamePass on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
Cocoon
The creators of Inside and Limbo’s new game is coming to Xbox.
Unlike its predecessors, it’s in 3D and reminded me of Death’s Door.
If the trailer is anything to go by the music in this game is next level.
It’ll be available day one on Xbox GamePass in 2023 on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
Lightyear Frontier
This looks a little like a first-person take on Stardew Valley.
Dropped on a new world with nothing but a mech, you have to gather resources around you, farm and upgrade your technology and settlement.
It’s coming in Spring 2023.
Lightyear Frontier will be available day one on Xbox GamePass on Xbox Series X|S, Cloud and PC.
