Pat Cummins replaces Tim Paine on cover of Cricket 22 video game

The vice-captain of the Australian men’s cricket team is set to replace Tim Paine on the cover of Cricket 22 video game.
Paine was dropped from the cover of the game just days before its release.
Pat Cummins will now feature alongside Australian women’s team captain Meg Lanning.

The release of the official cricket game for 2022 has also been delayed for a week as the studio works around the clock to make urgent changes following Paine’s shock resignation.

Big Ant Studios in Melbourne was quickly to redesign the cover of the game, which previously featured the former men’s cricket captain.
“To ensure the highly anticipated Cricket 22 game gets to fans by 2nd December, Big Ant Studios are proud to announce that Pat Cummins, vice-captain of the Australian men’s cricket team, will be on the Cricket 22 digital cover alongside Australian women’s team captain Meg Lanning,” a statement from Big Ant Studios said.
Last week, Big Ant said it was important players would be able to enjoy the full experience.

“Unfortunately, factors beyond our control have meant that we need to update the game’s cover art, other visuals and team lists. There was a critical day 1 patch that players will need to enjoy the full Cricket 22 experience that has consequently needed to be revoked,” it said in a statement.
“The new patch won’t be ready for release until December 2. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to delay the game’s release by a week for all platforms both physical and digital. 
“This is the first time Big Ant Studios have ever had to delay a game release, but we find ourselves in an unprecedented position.”
9News confirmed the changes with the CEO of Big Ant Studios, Ross Symons.
“The covers of our games have traditionally shown, with equal prominence, the men’s and women’s Australian captains,” Mr Symons told 9News.
“As Tim has resigned his captaincy, the Cricket 22 cover will be changed on all digital storefronts.”
Many gamers and cricket fans alike have already preordered the title, which hits store shelves on Thursday.
“For those that have purchased a retail version of Cricket 22, we will be providing a digital copy of the new cover, enabling them to print a new replacement cover at home if they wish,” Mr Symons said.
The Melbourne based gaming studio is expected to release an update to the game with the latest cricket rosters.

“We certainly didn’t see this coming, but we had already planned to have a day one patch for the Cricket 22 to include the most up to date rosters of both England and Australia,” Mr Symons said.
“Any team changes prior to the Ashes will be reflected in the game at the earliest opportunity, at or as close to the launch as is possible.”
The Big Ant Studios boss thanked fans for their “incredible support over the past eight years” and promised Cricket 22 would be the best of the series.

Cricket 22 is the sequel to the similarly titled 2019 game by Big Ant Studios. The same studio was also responsible for the official 2020 Australian Open game, AO Tennis 2.
Cricket 22 releases on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC on November 25.
