Next-gen Xbox and PlayStation user interfaces unveiled

Sony and Microsoft have both unveiled their new console user interfaces, or UX as they all now call it, this week.
Xbox’s new user interface is available now for Xbox One users, the UX rolling out as part of their October update.
The update includes a completely new look, profile themes and language accessibility – more notable upgrades to come with the launch of the Xbox Series X.

There’s already plenty worth noting about the Xbox Series X, from quick resume to backwards compatibility – we know enough to rate it highly.

PlayStation 5, on the other hand, is still relatively mysterious.
On Friday, Sony published a mini State of Play video showcasing their fresh user experience, which comes with major interface changes, features and more. There are a few exciting changes to the PlayStation 5, notably the cards feature, enabling players to skip through to certain points in games, access walkthrough on screen and quickly see progress.
A great new addition to the PS5 is ‘picture in picture’ mode. You can now watch a friend play a game at the same time you’re playing yours – I can see this coming in handy for when you want to play a non-multiplayer game at the same time.

We almost got a proper look at PlayStation launch exclusive, Destruction AllStars, an impressively quick boot up for the game, but it was skipped through and sped up – leaving us with an example of screen capturing and sharing.
PlayStation’s quick resume features briefly in the video, and while it will mostly assist gamers with digital versions of games, it’s still impressive to see the game keep it’s play state while switching to another game running in the background.
We’ll be bringing you more PS5 and Xbox new in the coming weeks, keep a look out.
The slow build-up to the next generation of console gaming is almost at a close. Xbox Series X and S launch on November 10, PlayStation 5 on November 12.
